![]() ![]() For me it rivals the story of SH2 in terms of greatness. The story is what makes this game truly great and in my opinion one of the best stories told in a horror game. But enough about gameplay because that is not the reason why this game has a cult following. Giving Brown items to find will lead you to your main objectives which is great since the airship most of the game takes place on features a pretty confusing layout. Brown is a loveable dog which follows you around. Jennifer has a trusty companion: Brown the dog. Instead of running around constantly checking your map and looking for unlocked doors like in Silent Hill. The bosses are some of the worst bosses I’ve ever experience in my life and I would never been able to beat them without save states at all. Hitboxes are broken and bosses can hit you when standing behind them. Enemies spawn in large hordes which can ambush you and hitstun you which makes escaping combat extremely difficult at times. Every single weapon has extremely short reach which means you have to stand directly in enemies faces to even hit them. Combat is more or less entirely melee focused featuring a surprising number of different weapons but none of the feel any good to use at all. The combat is an absolutely horrible clunky mess which does not work half of the time. Hands down the worst part of the game is combat. Although having to drop story items after each chapter is kind of annoying. The puzzles are fine in my opinion, on the easier side of the spectrum, and inventory management isn’t too much of a hassle since you can drop items at any point, and they will be automatically teleported to a box where they can be retrieved later. This is also the weakest part of the game. If you are a fan of survival horror none of these things will sound too unfamiliar. Like any other survival horror game, the moment-to-moment gameplay consists of solving puzzles, inventory management, horrible clunky combat, and lots of backtracking. The game also feels heavily inspired by the Silent Hill series both in terms of story elements and gameplay. The player explores these memories through different chapters presented as old European fairytales inspired by the classic works of the Grimm Brothers. The game’s story focuses on her reliving her past childhood traumas, which often leads to extremely uncomfortable and disturbing scenarios. Rule of Rose is a third person survival horror game set in 1930s England in which we follow our protagonist Jennifer. But throughout the years the game has attained a cult following and secondhand copies today can sell for hundreds of dollars. All of this led to the game being largely forgotten. A highly controversial game for it’s time, it was unjustly (imo) banned in the UK after British media alleged that the game featured scenes of “children buried alive underground, in-game sadomasochism, and underage eroticism.” The game also received mixed reviews criticizing gameplay. ![]() I’ve been on a survival horror kick lately, working my way through the vast library of PS2 era of survival horror games. ![]()
